You just created a new web site but want to pass on the search engine rankings of the old one to the new one. What is the most effective and spider/visitor friendly strategy to implement your web site redirection? You should use a 301 redirect.
Always use 301 (search engine friendly redirection)
What is a 301 redirect?
It is used when you want to redirect your web site or web pages. The code “301″ is interpreted as “moved permanently”.
Requirements for using a 301 redirect
- .htaccess file
How do I implement a 301 redirect?
For example non www to www
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]
</IfModule>
Save the .htaccess file to your root directory
When the search engine spiders visit your old web site or web pages, they will automatically be redirected to the new web site or web page.
Half knowledge = Bad result
Posted on: February 14, 2008
I am just complete my 3 Years in search engine marketing. If some ask me how much i know about SEM. My answer is always same (little bit). I think that i search engine optimizer perform a role of minister who have to guide billions of people to right track. No one is perfect on that. Learning is always necessary. My suggestion is always same for all the SEM guise, don’t work on half of knowledge if you have little knowledge about SEM and you are not sure about the result don’t do that. Because bad knowledge is always work like a poison for a site and you loose many things. Why i am sure about this because all this my experience says.
There are many SEM guru’s write articles, press release and books on SEM. Try to learn from there experience.
Sharing you the book of Brad Callen (SEO Made Easy) for learning.
